LSU Lands Mickey Johnson

LSU has received a commitment from defensive tackle Mickey Johnson from St. Paul’s High School in Covington, La.

Johnson chose LSU over Arkansas and Tennessee. He’s the 22nd commitment for LSU’s 2011 class.

Johnson’s commitment to LSU could be a sign that the Tigers are out of the running for Timmy Jernigan, a highly-touted defensive tackle from Lake City, Fla.

Jernigan has been strongly considering Florida and Florida State. Tennessee is also in the picture. Volquest.com reported on Thursday night that Jernigan has decided to take an official visit to UT this weekend, which could help the Vols make a strong push on the last weekend before signing day.

Jernigan Undecided On His Final Two Visits

Defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan still has two official visits to take before he chooses a school on National Signing Day.

Jernigan, who attends Columbia High School in Lake City, Fla., has already taken visits to LSU, Michigan and Southern California. He’s considering taking trips to Alabama, Florida and Florida State.

Florida has climbed back into the picture for Jernigan recently, according to Columbia coach Craig Howard.

I would say that Florida is semi back in it,” Howard told ESPN.com. “Coach (Will) Muschamp and those guys have done a good job with him. I know this week he has in-home visits with Florida, FSU, LSU and Alabama. It will be one of those four schools.”

Jernigan had considered taking a visit to Tennessee, but the Vols appeared to fall out of contention when their strength and conditioning coach, Bennie Wylie, left for the same position at Texas. Ron McKeefery was named UT’s new strength and conditioning coach on Monday.

Jernigan Has Tough Decisions To Make This Month

Defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan from Lake City (Fla.) Columbia High School is trying to decide which schools he wants to visit before National Signing Day on Feb. 2.

The schools on his list right now appear to be Alabama, Florida, LSU, Tennessee and Florida State.

Alabama, Florida and LSU have dealt with coaching changes and rumors. Jernigan says he doesn’t feel completely comfortable with Florida State, and he’s unsure if he wants to visit UT, although he said last week he plans to see Knoxville.

“The big thing is a matter of trust right now,” Jernigan told the Gainesville Sun. “Who can I trust? Who do I know is going to be there for a while? That’s the biggest thing for me right now.”

Florida seems to be in better position now that Will Muschamp has taken over as the Gators’ new head coach. Jernigan is considering a trip to Gainesville.

“I’ve really been thinking about it and it’s possible,” Jernigan said. “Time will tell.”

Jernigan is planning to make his decision on Feb. 2. Players aren’t required to sign that day, which gives Jernigan the option of waiting if he isn’t sure which school he wants to attend.
