SEC Headlines – 6/22/12

1.  SI.com’s Stewart Mandel writes that the selection committee idea helped bridge the gap to a playoff and he believes it “will lead to fan satisfaction.”  (In his view, the committee could lead to better nonconference scheduling.  Let’s hope so.)

2.  Tony Barnhart of CBSSports.com says it was time for a change even if a selection committee means more controversy.

3.  And a quick look at previous BCS seasons suggests that plenty of school’s would have grumbled and griped even with a selection committee.

4.  FoxSports.com’s Thayer Evans says “the SEC/Big 12 massacred the Big Ten/Pac-12″ in the playoff negotiations.  (So long as the new selection committee doesn’t decide on its own to invite lower-ranked conference champs over higher-ranked non-division-winners like Alabama — still a possibility — Evans is right.)

5.  CBSSports.com’s Brett McMurphy further summarizes what went down with Wednesday’s playoff announcement.

6.  The timing of the Rose Bowl could still impact when the football semifinals are played even when that game isn’t serving as a host bowl.

7.  Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick sorta/kinda shot down rumors out of Texas claiming that his school’s Olympic sports are “likely headed” to the Big 12…

8.  That’s probably because the Irish have a path to the new playoff – if the presidents approve what the commissioners send them — even as an independent in football.

9.  Speaking of the Big 12, Texas Tech might cancel a game with Texas State and just play 11 contests this fall if ESPN puts the game on the Longhorn Network.  (Good to see that the Big 12 is still one big happy family.)  UPDATE — ESPN supposedly has backed off plans to put Tech’s game on Texas’ network.

10.  In further realignment news… earlier this week, Clemson hoops coach Brad Brownell made it clear that he’s just as anti-Big 12 as football coach Dabo Swinney is.

11.  The NCAA’s director of enforcement has resigned just eight months after taking the job.

12.  Let’s get into the SEC stuff… Mississippi State, Georgia and Tennessee made this writer’s list of the 10 easiest nonconference football schedules in the country.  Congratulations, season-ticket-buyers.

13.  Since 2002, the SEC trails the ACC, Pac-12 and Big East in NBA draftees (but it’s ahead of the Big 12 and way ahead of the Big Ten).

14.  ESPN.com’s Mark Schlabach says it’s possible that more bowl could be added to the BCS (meaning: semi-final) rotation including the SEC/Big 12 “Champions” Bowl.  (Which as we’ve written several times would mean more jack for both leagues if they’re able to effectively bid out a semifinal game on their own.)

15.  The NCAA will allow Auburn fullback transfer Jay Prosch to play right away…

16. And tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen says that makes him a winner, too as part of AU’s “gruesome twosome.”

17.  Les Miles believes LSU will be able to “throw the football more and more efficiently” this season.

18.  Mississippi State’s $80 million stadium expansion will begin this fall at Scott Field.

19.  New Florida b’ball assistant Rashon Burno says he’s a “tenacious” recruiter.

20.  There’ll be a new level of talent in Georgia’s running back corps this fall.

21.  Mark Fox has added the Iona Gaels to UGA’s hoops schedule.

22.  The Gainesville Sun ranks Kentucky at Louisville as the SEC’s 25th best game of the football season.

23.  Florida’s Billy Donovan says Tennessee’s Jarnell Stokes took on a leadership role for their Team USA U18 championship squad.

24.  Sad story: UT football player Daniel Hood discovered the bodies of his mother and her boyfriend in his mother’s apartment yesterday.

25.  Ex-Vanderbiltian John Jenkins is “getting really good feedback” regarding next week’s NBA draft.

26.  The Gainesville Sun ranks Missouri quarterback James Franklin as the SEC’s 25th best player.

BONUS — Tonight, Arkansas and South Carolina will meet on the baseball diamond tonight to determine who’ll reach the three-game NCAA championship series and face Arizona.

THANKS — During the summer we sometimes have to do a little behind-the-scenes work here at MrSEC.com.  Even rarer, we try to take a mini-vacation every now and then.  So thanks for putting up with a week of mostly headlines this week.  We’ll be back to a more normal routine next week.
