Huskers’ QB Says Big Ten Defenses Better Than SEC’s

gfx - they said itApparently Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez doesn’t let the scoreboard interfere with his desire to chirp and chatter.  The Cornhuskers may have lost Tuesday’s Capital One Bowl to Georgia 45-31, but that didn’t keep Martinez from saying this:

“I think the Big Ten, talent-wise, is a lot better, and the defenses in the Big Ten are better than SEC defenses.  This was supposed to be one of the top defenses in the SEC, and we pretty much did anything we wanted against them.”

Now, Nebraska did pile up 443 yards against the Bulldogs and they averaged a whopping 5.6 yards per play in doing so.  But a little context may be in order.

The Huskers had the Big Ten’s best offense in 2012.  And that 5.6 yards-per-play average against Georgia was their fourth-lowest total all season.  Only Iowa (3.9), Michigan (5.0), and Minnesota (5.5) fared better against Martinez and crew.  Of course, all three of those teams lost to Nebraska, while Georgia beat them by two touchdowns.

In addition, Bo Pelini’s team took a 31-23 lead over Georgia with 9:42 to play in the third quarter.  And then they never scored again.  So in terms of “doing anything they wanted,” that apparently only applied to the first 35 minutes of action.

Also, if Nebraska scored 31 on a poor defense from the SEC and Georgia hung 45 on the Cornhusker D, what does that say about NU’s defense?  That SEC offenses are spectacular?  Or that Nebraska’s defense isn’t as good as the others in the Big Ten that Martinez thinks so highly of?

At, we’re never big on players running their mouths — regardless of team or conference — but we’re especially bothered when guys who just got whipped talk smack.  If a team loses by two touchdowns and can’t score for half the game, it’s probably best if that team’s players don’t brag about how easy the competition was.
