Henry’s 502 Yards Sets State Record

It was a record-setting Friday night for Yulee (Fla.) High School running back Derrick Henry.

Henry rushed for 502 yards on 45 carries to help Yulee defeat Jackson High School 45-28, setting the single-game rushing record in the state of Florida. The previous record (501 yards) was set by Tampa Bay Tech running back Shawn Smith in 1985.

Henry, who’s ranked the nation’s No. 3 athlete by Rivals.com, is expected to choose Alabama over Tennessee on Thursday. Alabama became the school to beat for Henry’s services soon after he decommitted from Georgia in June.

Henry gave credit to Yulee’s offensive line for his historic performance.

“Our offensive line did a great job, the coaches called the right plays, and I just had to make it happen,” Henry said.

Make it happen he did. Yulee coach Bobby Ramsey was willing to give a lot more credit to Henry than he took himself.

“We’ve had these nights – not necessarily 500-yard nights – where you can tell early on, he’s got it,” Ramsay said. “Feed it to him.”

That will be Alabama’s plan if it lands Henry on Thursday.
