UK’s Brown-To-UCLA Picking Up Steam

Kentucky co-defensive coordinator Steve Brown may soon land as the new D-coordinator at UCLA.  But I’m not sure he’s any closer to the job today than he was a week ago.

On February 10th, The Orange County Register reported that Brown had interviewed for the job on Rick Neuheisel’s staff.  That report led to Chip Patterson of CBSSportsline.com posting the rumor later that day.  At that point, the UCLA blog BruinsNation.com picked up the story two days later.  BleedBlueKentucky.com posted a link to BruinsNation yesterday.  And John Clay of The Lexington Herald-Leader posted a link to BleedBlueKentucky’s post today.

Got all that?

The Orange County Register posted a story on February 10th.  That story went through the blog cycle and now pops up five days later at The Lexington Herald-Leader’s site under the link: “Steve Brown to UCLA picking up steam.”

Whether or not Brown’s candidacy is picking up steam in the real life or just on the internet remains to be seen.

Kentucky Makes Football Hires Officials

When Rick Minter and Steve Pardue turned up at Kentucky’s bowl practice on Saturday, it became pretty clear that Joker Phillips had already filled the two open spots on his coaching staff.  But UK had to announce the openings and leave them unfilled for a period of seven days.

Time’s up.

Today UK officially announced that the former Cincinnati head coach (and ex-Joker Phillips boss) Minter will be the Cats’ new co-defensive coordinator alongside Steve Brown.

Pardue — who funneled a number of player from his LaGrange, Georgia high school to UK — will take over as running backs coach.

Only three coaches remain from the staff Phillips inherited from Rich Brooks last offseason (Brown, offensive coordinator Randy Sanders and linebackers coach/recruiting coordinator Chuck Smith).

A Staff Shake-Up In Lexington

Joker Phillips has a pair of vacancies on his coaching staff today.  Kentucky’s coach will be looking to replace secondary coach Chris Thurmond and running backs coach Larry Brinson.  Both coaches were holdovers from Rich Brooks’ final staff in Lexington.

UK officials won’t say whether the two coaches were fired.

The Louisville Courier-Journal reports that Phillips plans to replace Thurmond with a co-defensive coordinator to work with Steve Brown.

Staff changes for Joker

It didn’t take long for Kentucky Coach Joker Phillips to get the ball rolling on changes to his coaching staff for next season.

Phillips was non-committal when asked about potential staff changes during his Monday press conference, but on Tuesday morning UK spokesman Tony Neely confirmed a couple of shakeups to Phillips’ staff.

-First, running backs coach Larry Brinson and safeties coach Chris Thurmond are no longer on staff.

-Secondly, a new defensive assistant coach will be hired, and that coach will serve as co-defensive coordinator with Steve Brown.

Two assistant coaching positions were posted on UK’s web site on Tuesday. Jobs must remain posted for seven days before an official hire can be made.
