UF Hires Pelphrey As Assistant; No Word On Arrested Players

Former Arkansas coach John Pelphrey will be back on an SEC bench next basketball season.  In fact, he’ll back in Gainesville.  Billy Donovan announced the re-hiring of his former assistant yesterday.

“He’s very excited,” Florida’s coach said.  “He went through a difficult situation at Arkansas, but one of the things I felt like I needed was certainly familiarity.”

He has that with Pelphrey who coached with him from 1994 through 2002 at both Marshall and Florida.

“I know John.  John knows the (SEC), and he knows what I’m going to be looking for and wanting in recruiting.”

The Gators — with Pelphrey in tow — will head to Fayetteville for next season’s game with the Razorbacks.

Donovan has added another former head coach to his staff, too.  Former St. John’s coach Norm Roberts will sit alongside Donovan and Pelphrey next season.

Pelphrey and Roberts replace Rob Lanier — who just landed the head coaching job at Wyoming — and Richard Pitino — who is heading to Louisville to join his father’s staff.

As far as the topic of arrested/suspended players Erik Murphy and Cody Larson goes, Donovan didn’t have much to say to the gathered media.

“There was some unfortunate events that I was very disappointed that took place this weekend with Cody Larson and Erik Murphy.  I made a statement that both guys are suspended right now from our team.  I really can’t take any questions and cannot talk about it because obviously, it’s ongoing.  All I can say is I’m disappointed in those guys, they’re disappointed in themselves, and we’ll have to wait and see what happens going forward.”
