Thought Of The Day – 2/22/13

Good Friday to you.  Hope you’re able to kick off your weekend the right way today.

The first thing off the MrSEC.com iPod this morning isn’t exactly uplifting, but it is a darn good song.  I saw Green Day perform it live in Foxboro, Massachusetts a few years back.  Very strong.  Great live.

But beware if you intend to give this one a listen… there’s one unedited word in there that’s definitely NSFW.

“My shadow’s the only one that walks beside me.”

Rumor/Report: K-State’s Martin Interested In Carolina Job

GamecockCentral.com — the Rivals site covering South Carolina — is reporting that Kansas State head coach Frank Martin “has been confirmed as a candidate with ‘heavy’ interest in USC, according to a source close to the situation.”  (That’s paywall stuff, folks, so you’ll need to buy a subscription for more.)

If true, it seems that Carolina AD Eric Hyman could book one flight to Kansas City and knock out a pair of interviews — one with Martin and one with believed-to-be-top-candidate Gregg Marshall of Wichita State.

Martin — a Miami native — is known for his drill-sergeant style (hell, in a movie R. Lee Ermey would play him… NSFW, by the way.).  He is also known for taking Kansas State to four NCAA tournaments in his five years in Manhattan.  The 45-year-old has never won fewer than 21 games in a season and has a .684 winning percentage.

But he currently makes $1.5 million in a basketball-loving state.  Would he really have “heavy” interest in moving to a football-first league and a program that’s seen the downfalls of George Felton, Eddie Fogler, Dave Odom and Darrin Horn in the past 20 years?

If so — and if Carolina could offer him enough cash to make the move — he’d be the second ex-Bob Huggins assistant to coach in the league along with old colleague Andy Kennedy.  Hmmm.  Seems all those Huggins guys have tempers when you think about it.

SEC Headlines – 1/12/12 Part Two

1.  Rebounding remains a concern for Florida’s Billy Donovan.

2.  New Florida offensive coordinator Brent Pease hasn’t exactly set the world on fire statistically.

3.  Shawn Williams and Bacarri Rambo will return to Georgia’s defense next season.

4.  Their coach — Todd Grantham — says he wants to be at Georgia for “a very long time” despite rumors that the Atlanta Falcons might come calling.

5.  Kentucky needs to learn there’s no place for lollygaggers on the road in the SEC.  (Think John Calipari’s ever given his team this speech? NSFW)

6.  Darius Miller drained some important 3-pointers for the Cats at Auburn last night.

7.  Steve Spurrier liked South Carolina’s Top 10 finish, but he wants to shoot higher next season.

8.  He’ll have to do so with a rebuilt coaching staff.

9.  Uncertainty in the football program is causing worries for the Vol Nation.

10.  Cuonzo Martin says Clemson transfer Cory Stanton will be “the type of high-character kid we want in this program.”

11.  Defending his program, James Franklin promises honesty at Vanderbilt, not playing time.

SEC Headlines – 2/25/11 Part One

1.  Florida wrapped up a portion of the SEC East title with a 71-62 win over Georgia in Gainesville last night.

2.  Chandler Parsons came off the bench to contribute, saying afterwards: “There was no shot I was missing this game.  You’d have to have cut my leg off.”

3.  Kenny Boynton’s three consecutive second-half 3-pointers helped the Gators pull away.

4.  For Georgia, it was yet another case of blowing a halftime lead.

5.  “We’re not the most mature group when it comes to handling success,” Mark Fox said…

6.  Want proof?  Look at this rundown of UGA’s blown leads this season.

7.  It’s getting pretty late in the year for Kentucky to start developing more toughness.

8.  John Calipari wants his team to get mad.  In the words of Patches O’Houlihan: “You’ve got to get angry, you’ve got to get meeean!  That’s the only way you can play.”  (NSFW and bad quality, but maybe Cal needs to deliver the speech offered up at the 4:35 mark of this clip.)

9.  It sounds like former South Carolina tight end Weslye Saunders might finally be assuming some accountability for his past struggles.

Slive Didn’t Like Bama’s “Fax Cam” Girls

Things are getting pretty petty in the SEC, folks.

On national signing day, Alabama had a webcam focused in on the actual fax machine receiving letters of intent from recruits.  There were also web photos attached to the site that showed an unidentified female Alabama student in a short skirt standing next to the fax machine and a board where names of each confirmed signee were posted as they arrived.

The student is part of Alabama’s “Crimson Cabaret” dance team and was wearing her official dance team outfit in the photo.  (Check it out at left.)  Apparently different girls would post names to the board as faxes arrived.  Click the headline for a bigger view.  And here’s another shot.  (NSFW due to language.)

Well someone at another SEC school didn’t like the photos and complained to commissioner Mike Slive about it.  This morning, Slive called Alabama athletic director Mal Moore to complain.

“The commissioner was made aware of it Thursday morning and he felt it was inappropriate,” SEC spokesman Charles Bloom said.

The pictures are no longer posted at Bama’s website.
