Praise For UF, UGA Assistants

FootballScoop.com has gathered a pair of quotes regarding one Florida assistant coach who Will Muschamp retained and one UAB assistant who’s on his way to Georgia.

First, Muschamp himself has opened up about DJ Durkin, the Gators linebackers coach and special teams coordinator who Urban Meyer brought to Gainesville last year:

“I have two guys that I really respect in this profession that both called me and said, if you don’t retain him, I’m going to hire him.  That was a good motivating factor…” in keeping Durkin on his staff.

Second, UAB head coach Neil Callaway praised former offensive line coach Will Friend as he heads to Athens to take over for former UGA O-line coach Stacy Searels:

“I know the people that you’re talking about and they’re all good coaches, but I’d put Will Friend up against any offensive line coach in the country.  I think he’s that good.”

Here’s guessing Gator and Dawg fans like hearing that kind of talk.

Friend Hiring At Georgia Is Official

Looks like Will Friend passed his background check.  The former UAB offensive line coach has officially been hired by Georgia to replace outgoing line coach Stacy Searels (who left for Texas last month).  Friend spent two years on the UGA staff as a GA in 2003 and 2004.

“I got to see first-hand his work ethic when he was a graduate assistant on our staff,” Mark Richt said.  “And since that time he’s developed into a seasoned, top-notch offensive line coach.”

Friend has spent the past four seasons under Neil Callaway at UAB.  As The AJC points out, the Blazers ranked 15th nationally in sacks allowed, 30th in total offense, 24th in passing offense and 59th in rushing offense last year.
