On The Road Again: RB Blakely Leaving Auburn

You might remember Auburn running back Mike Blakely.  Not because he mustered 153 yards on 33 carries last season as a redshirt freshman.  But probably because in 2011 he signed with first-year Florida coach Will Muschamp and then immediately asked for a release to transfer.  Blakely landed on the Plains soon after.

Now he’s leaving Auburn.

AU officials confirmed last night that Blakely is no longer enrolled at the school and internet speculation is tying him to South Florida’s program.  Blakely didn’t manage a carry during the Tigers’ final five games last season and he must not believe things will get much better with Gus Malzahn now running the show.

Good luck to the kid.  Next stop: Winnemucca, Mack.

Chizik Shares Some Info Pre-Writers’ Room

Gene Chizik has chatted with a few reporters before entering the main writers’ room in Hoover.  Here’s some of the info he’s shared (according to reporter tweets):

1.  The coach will not discuss the Mike Blakely situation until the process is finished.  (Blakely tweeted yesterday that the NCAA had denied his appeal to play immediately at Auburn, after transferring from Florida.)

2.  Chizik said he was simply looking for clarity when he asked the NCAA’s head of enforcement about its investigation into Auburn during the SEC meetings in Destin.  He said the exchange was not confrontational.  He also said that he feels good about where Auburn is with regards to the NCAA investigation.

3.  Running back Eric Smith has been permanently dismissed from Auburn’s team.

Blakely’s Appeal Denied; No Football In 2011

In February, running back Mike Blakely signed with Florida.  Just a few months later in May he was given the go-ahead by Will Muschamp to transfer to Auburn if that was his desire.  At Auburn, Blakely appealed to the NCAA to allow him to play immediately — since he had never played in a game for the Gators.

Today, the NCAA denied that appeal according to Blakely’s Twitter account:

“Appeal was denied!  No football for me this up coming fall!!!!”

Blakely was one of the nation’s top running back prospects when he inked with Florida.  Now it’ll be another year before we see his talents… at Auburn.

AU’s Compliance Director Hoping For A Less Stressful Year

Asked what he would wish for over the next 12 months, Auburn NCAA compliance director Rich McGlynn cut right to the chase:

“Hopefully, next year is not as stressful.  I hope next year is as eventful on the field.  It’s been an interesting year for sure.  I love Auburn.  I love working for Jay Jacobs.  I love our coaching staff and I love our kids.  It’s been a wild ride.  From a professional and personal level, the stress has been there.

We’re working hard.  Does that mean we’re perfect at what we do?  Absolutely not, but no one is.  But we are doing it the right way, and we’re building a program.”

McGlynn said that he also hopes the NCAA will grant Mike Blakely a waiver allowing the former Florida running back to play right away on The Plains.  The freshman Blakely signed with the Gators but never played or practiced with UF before deciding to transfer.

UF’s Blakely To Transfer

Well that didn’t take long.

Freshman tailback Mike Blakely has already decided that Florida and Will Muschamp’s new program aren’t for him.  The early enrollee did not participate in spring drills due to surgery on his left shoulder in January.  Now he’s decided to transfer.

“Mike has come to the conclusion that the University of Florida is not where he wants to play football,” Muschamp said via press release.  “We wish him the best of luck.”

Farewell, Mike Blakely.  We hardly knew ye.
