A&M’s Sumlin Thinks WR Evans Should Be Getting Some Heisman Love

mike-evans-tamu-practiceThe latest USA Today Heisman Poll is led by Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota.  Behind him comes Florida State QB Jameis Winston.  At #3 is the reigning Heisman-winner, Johnny Manziel.  Then come two more signal-callers: Baylor’s Bryce Petty and Alabama’s AJ McCarron.

That’s a whole lotta quarterbacks.  And while Kevin Sumlin is sure to be happy for Johnny Football, he believes one of his quarterback’s key weapons deserves some Heisman hype as well.  Where’s the love for Aggie receiver Mike Evans?

“I think he’s as good a player as there is in the country,” Sumlin said yesterday.  “I’m more surprised there isn’t any Heisman talk about him.”

Obviously, Evans and Manziel are tied to one another when it comes to on-field success.  Manziel leads the SEC in passing with 2,594 yards, 22 touchdowns, and a completion percentage of 73.0% through eight games.  Evans is the SEC’s leading receiver with 137.6 yards per game, 1,101 yards overall, and 11 touchdown catches.  He also leads the league in average yards per catch with a 22.94 yard-per-catch clip.

Both Manziel and Evans are sophomores.  “They are playing at a high level and have played at a high level,” added Sumlin.  “And I don’t anticipate that changing.

Las Vegas Sports Book Has Alabama 3-Point Favorite Over Oregon

Sports BookOne survived on the road against a fellow SEC opponent.  The other one destroyed an SEC team on its home turf Saturday.  With Alabama and Oregon undefeated and ranked No. 1 and No. 2, it was only a matter of time before people began talking about a matchup in a national championship game.

Preparing for a potential matchup, the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas has starting taking wagers with the Crimson Tide listed as a 3-point favorite over the Ducks.

Alabama is a heavy favorite Saturday (40 points in some places) against Colorado State.  Oregon is off this week and kicks off its conference schedule against Cal on September 28th.

This news comes on the same day another sports book says Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota is now the favorite to win the Heisman.  He’s a (slight) favorite over Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel. Here’s how the top five candidates breakdown according to Bovada.

Marcus Mariota, Oregon: 9/2

Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M: 5/1

AJ McCarron, Alabama: 13/2

Teddy Bridgewater, Louisville: 13/2

Jameis Winston, Florida State: 9/1

South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is listed at 25-1.

Oregon QB Says A&M’s Manziel Plays “Backyard Football”

mariota-manzielSo maybe his nickname should be Johnny Backyard Football.  At least that’s what Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota seems to think.

Judging by the comments on a couple of Aggie messageboards, the Ducks’ QB seems to have ruffled some feathers — pun intended — when he described Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel’s game as “backyard football.”

“For a lot of us, it’s how we were introduced to the game — just going out and making plays.  I’d like to do that.  It would be fun.  But it would be outside of my calling here.”

Now, personally I don’t see what’s so inflammatory about that comment.  Granted, Manziel was once committed to Oregon and perhaps there’s a bit of history between the two signal-callers, but this seems to be a case of looking for trash talk.

Mariota simply alluded to the differences between his role in Eugene and Manziel’s role in College Station.  And judging by that Heisman Trophy he picked up in December, Manziel seems to fit his role perfectly.

Stay tuned, but I don’t think Aggie fans should be losing any sleep over this one.
