Five quick things from John Calipari’s press conference previewing Friday’s opener with East Tennessee State:
The Enes Kanter buzz. With internet rumors saying Kanter has been cleared to practice, with a possible ruling by the end of the month, Kanter was indeed in the practice gym shooting with the other players when the media entered for interviews. Kanter was not wearing a practice jersey, however. When the media entered, assistant coach John Robic came and got Kanter and the two walked off the practice floor together. Then during Calipari’s Q&A part with the media, Cal said that there was a chance that the school could hear something before Friday, but would not play Friday. Later, when asked if Kanter could practice, the coach waffled, saying he didn’t know, and then, on his way into the gym said he was about to find out.
(Update(s): (1) Despite what you may have read elsewhere, Kanter did not walk through Calipari’s press conference wearing practice gear. (2) Jerry Tipton did see Kanter headed into practice wearing his practice gear.)
Calipari kept pushing East Tennessee’s experience, and how his team is so inexperienced. He said he was still learning about his team, would not really learn until he sees them in game conditions.
During the player interview session, Doron Lamb said he has been working more and more at the point guard, and has been going against Brandon Knight in practice. Asked who gets the best of the battle, Lamb declined to say.
Cal said he did not get to watch John Wall’s triple-double on Wednesday night, but did text the Wizard, “Did you really get a triple-double?” Wall’s text back: “Yes, sir.”
And, No. 5, here’s the Cal video when asked about Kanter:
