Cignetti Leaves Bama For IUP

Alabama wide receivers coach Curt Cignetti has been introduced as the new head football coach of Indiana University of Pennsylvania this morning, opening up a slot on Nick Saban’s coaching staff.

Cignetti has been at Bama for four seasons and has been serving as Alabama’s recruiting coordinator.  Here’s guessing Saban can handle it, but losing one’s recruiting coordinator 10 days before signing day figures to be bumpy.

“Curt did an outstanding job for us in his four years at the University of Alabama and I know he will do the same at Indiana University of Pennsylvania,” Saban said.  Cignetti’s father is IUP’s all-time winningest coach.

So let me get this straight — There’s an Indiana of Pennsylvania in addition to a California of Pennsylvania?

On another front, The Tuscaloosa News reports that UA linebackers coach Sal Sunseri is not expected to join old boss John Fox with the Denver Broncos.

Bama’s Sunseri Contacted By Fox, Broncos

New Denver Broncos coach John Fox has reached out to Alabama linebackers coach Sal Sunseri – one of Fox’s former assistants with the Carolina Panthers — about joining his latest NFL staff.

Sunseri recently interviewed for but did not get the head coaching job at Pitt, his alma mater.  Fox and Sunseri also worked together as assistants at Pitt from 1986 through 1988.

Sunseri joined Nick Saban’s staff in 2009 to replace the departed Lance Thompson.

Sunseri has a son who has already early enrolled at Bama as a linebacker/safety prospect.
