LSU Hires McGaughey As Special Teams Coordinator

So much for Les Miles not having a special teams coordinator in place in time for spring practice.  The Tigers will kick things off tomorrow and Thomas McGaughey will be the man in charge of the Tigers’ specialty units.

McGaughey replaces Joe Robinson who left for North Carolina earlier this year.  The 37-year-old coach has served as a special teams assistant with the New York Giants for the past four years.

Like Robinson before him, McGaughey will assist defensive line coach Brick Haley in addition to handling his special teams duties.

That looks like one cheery dude, folks.

Special Teams Hire Soon For LSU?

LSU’s Les Miles might be inching closer to hiring a new special teams coordinator to replace Joe Robinson.  Last year’s coordinator left for North Carolina last month.

“We would prefer if we could have him for (the March 11th start of spring practice), but not necessarily,” Miles told The Daily Reveille last week.  “We want to get the right guy.  We’ll take our time with the decision.  We don’t expect to take a sidestep in special teams.  We expect to get better.”

But now FootballScoop.com is reporting that Miles has promoted Lunda Wells — an administrative intern and former player at Southern U. — to “assistant to the head coach / special teams assistant.”  Also: “Our sources tell us that Les plans to make a decision soon on the special teams coordinator position.”

However, it could be that Wells has been promoted to “special teams assistant” because Miles does not believe he can have a new coordinator in place by Friday.  Wells could theoretically run the special teams show until a full-time replacement for Robinson can be found.

At this late date, Miles might have to bring in a coach who is currently unemployed.  It’s unusual for assistants to move around too much post-spring practice.  If he grabs someone from another program, that program will have a hole to fill late in the game.

Stay tuned…
