It’s not everyday a proven All-American football player falls into your lap. But that’s exactly what’s happening for Gene Chizik and Auburn. Sophomore Illinois fullback Jay Prosch — a first-team All-American according to Pro Football Weekly — is transferring to the Tigers.
His goal is to get closer to his mother who is currently receiving treatment for brain cancer in Mobile, Alabama. New Illinois coach Tim Beckman gave his blessing to Prosch, so it’s likely the NCAA will grant him a hardship waiver that would allow him to play immediately.
Prosch has two years of eligibility remaining. Auburn did not use a “true” fullback under offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn’s watch. The Tigers’ new coordinator — when he’s hired — will have a good one on hand should he choose to use him.
