Just a few days before National Signing Day, Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze took to Twitter to voice his frustration with the whispers and innuendo regarding his recruiting class. ”If you have facts about a violation, send it to firstname.lastname@example.org. If not, please do not slander these young men or insult their family.”
According to Kyle Veazey of the Memphis Commercial Appeal, eighty-five times over the next few days, someone did just that.
The paper made a public records request and the Ole Miss general counsel office handed over 54 of the emails.
While many of them were apparently from Georgia fans upset about the Ole Miss recruitment of five-star lineman Laremy Tunsil (who signed with the Rebels), others just took the time vent their anger.
“Your football coach tweeted a request to send emails to your office with proof of recruiting violations. Any decent football player signing to play for your pathetic football team is all the proof needed.”
But not everyone was upset. Freeze even got backing from a Florida fan.
“Coach, I saw your Twitter challenge — good for you. As a Gator fan, I can’t be too pleased that your class is this good. That being said, I am glad you took a stand against those that hide behind an IP address to attempt to vilify anyone and anything just to make themselves feel good. Hope the class pans out for you over the next four years- except of course when you play the Gators.”
Ole Miss ended up signing 13 four or five-star recruits in its 2013 class. This is how MrSEC ranked the Rebels class.
