The Louisville Cardinals — fresh off a Sugar Bowl pasting of Florida — had hoped to schedule another neutral site game with an SEC foe to open the 2013 season. According to U of L coach Charlie Strong, the school first tried to work out a game that would pit the Cardinals and quarterback Teddy Bridgewater against Texas A&M at Houston’s Reliant Stadium.
When details couldn’t be ironed out on that end, Louisville targeted a game with Alabama in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff in Atlanta. Virginia Tech had planned to back out of that game if quarterback Logan Thomas had left Blacksburg early for the NFL. He didn’t leave, the Hokies didn’t back out, and the Cardinals’ efforts were blocked again.
No offense to Alabama, but a game featuring both Bridgewater and A&M Heisman-winner Johnny Manziel would have been a fun kickoff to the college football season for fans everywhere. Including Bridgewater himself:
“It would have been a great experience to play against last year’s Heisman Trophy winner and arguably the best player in college football. He lats it on the line like I do. It would have been a great matchup.”
With both Louisville and Texas A&M expecting successful seasons once again this year, it’s possible a Bridgewater/Manziel matchup could come sometime in January, rather than in August.
