Vandy Hoops Aide Muller Hired By Illinois State

Dan Muller is leaving Kevin Stallings’ staff at Vanderbilt to become the new head coach at Illinois State, his alma mater.  The 36-year-old was mentioned briefly in connection with the Mississippi State vacancy before Rick Ray was hired.

Muller played for Stallings at Illinois State from 1995 through 1998 when the Redbirds won two MVC titles and reached back-to-back NCAA Tournaments in ’97 and ’98.  Stallings coached one more year in Normal, Illinois before taking the Vandy gig.  Muller joined him in Nashville and his been on Stallings’ bench for 12 seasons since.

ISU hasn’t been to the NCAA Tournament since Muller was playing and Stallings was coaching.  The young coach will have his work cut out for him.  So will Stallings.

Vanderbilt will need to replace Muller — a strong recruiter — as well as key players John Jenkins, Jeffery Taylor, Festus Ezeli, Lance Goulbourne, Steve Tchiengang, and Brad Tinsley next season.  At this point, 2012-13 figures to be a total rebuild for the Commodores.
