Vanderbilt received a commitment on Wednesday from Memphis (Tenn.) Harding Academy athlete Mack Weaver.
Weaver, who could play tight end or defensive end in college, is Vanderbilt’s 21st commitment for the class of 2013.
Weaver is the fourth Memphis prospect to commit to Vanderbilt for 2013. He joins wide receiver Latevius Rayford from Central High School and receiver Gerald Perry and defensive back Darrius Sims from Whitehaven.
Perry said Weaver’s commitment shows Vanderbilt coach James Franklin has made a strong impression on the city of Memphis.
“It means a lot,” Perry told MrSEC. “It means Vanderbilt is going to have a strong pipeline in Memphis. When others see us go there they’re going to start looking at the program and want to commit.”
Perry said he’s trying to convince other schools’ commitments to take a closer look at Vanderbilt. One of those prospects is Tennessee commitment Jalen Reeves-Maybin from Clarksville, Tenn.
“I tell him football is a great sport but it can only take you so far,” Perry said. “There’s life after football and Vanderbilt can help provide you with that.”
Perry said he believes the message has made an impact on Reeves-Maybin, who said earlier this month he’ll likely take official visits to Vanderbilt and Ole Miss this fall.
Whitehaven teammate Mark Dodson Jr. has given no indication to Perry that he’ll change his mind about his pledge to Ole Miss. But Perry said he’ll keep recruiting Dodson anyway.
“He tells me he’s not coming,” Perry said, “but he’s going to come. He’s going to change his mind.”
Don’t expect Franklin to stop recruiting the Memphis area. He told the Memphis Commercial Appeal in May that recruiting the city is a high priority for Vanderbilt.
“I did the research, and I just found out how many Vanderbilt alumni and influential people we have in Memphis,” Franklin said in May. “All those factors made sense to us. I think we realized very early on that Memphis is very important to what we’re trying to do.”
