LSU recruiting coordinator Frank Wilson needed just one year on the bayou to wrap up Rivals.com’s “Recruiter of the Year” title. Now the Louisiana native is looking to put down roots after stops at Ole Miss, Southern Miss and Tennessee in recent years.
“I always aspired to have the opportunity to come back home and coach at LSU.” And that’s just what he did after serving on Lane Kiffin’s short-lived staff in Knoxville. In Baton Rouge, Wilson helped land a Top 10 signing class in his first season.
“Usually, people who are socially adaptive and like to engage with people are the guys who usually do a good job recruiting,” Wilson told LSU’s The Daily Reveille. “Then the next piece of it is not just being a good recruiter but being a good talent evaluator. It was just something I embraced. I enjoy doing it.”
And what of NCAA rules that prevent coaches from buying players even the smallest gifts?
“It may appear that it’s silly, I mean, he got him a bottle of water or something of that case. I guess unfortunately we’ve had a small group of the overall collegiate coaches that took advantage of those things. That bottle of water became dinner and that dinner became a car and that car became a house.”
I would insert a joke about Kiffin here, but in light of the rumors swirling about Patrick Peterson, it’s probably best not to even josh about such things.
