Mullen Wants MSU Fired Up For championship style game with auburn

Some coaches play down big games.  Some coaches play them up.  The guys playing them up are usually the ones who are trying to elevate their programs to a higher level of year-in, year-out play.

Enter Dan Mullen whose MSU Bulldogs travel to Auburn this weekend.  Mullen said the following on yesterday’s “Scott Van Pelt Show” on ESPN radio:

“I don’t want to control the emotions (of his players).  I want our guys to let (the emotions) go and play this as if it is a championship-style game.  That first conference game, with the two teams playing it, especially this early in the season, means so much.  You’re talking about a two-game swing, not a one-game swing in this one game.  Whoever wins this game is in first place in the SEC West and also has a two-game advantage because you hold the tiebreaker head-to-head over the other opponent.  It becomes such a big game.  I don’t know if it’s a statement game just because they’re defending national champions.  For us, it’s a statement game because this is our opportunity to jump into first place in the SEC West.”

Mullen also said he expects the five players suspended for last week’s opener to return for this weekend’s “championship-style game.”
