By now everyone is aware of the fact that Missouri kicker Andrew Baggett missed a 24-yard field goal in overtime that would have staved off a 27-24 blown-lead, overtime loss last weekend. Baggett took so much Twitter grief after the game that it became national news and led coach Gary Pinkel to tell a number of Mizzou fans to “back off.”
“I feel terrible with what’s happened with the media and him and his fans, just being a kicker. Especially when it’s not completely his fault. There’s not a kicker that goes through his career that hasn’t missed one. I feel terrible about how he’s getting treated for that.
Obviously, it was just exciting to see the ball come off (the upright) and get the win, but at the same time I feel bad for him.”
Fry pointed out — as have several websites — that the hold for Baggett’s kick wasn’t perfect. “He got a lot of laces on that hold… It’s really hard to (kick with the laces). So I guess the fault lies with both, not just him, but there’s a lot that goes into it, too.”
Considering the nastiness hurled at Baggett, perhaps Mizzou’s holder should stay away from Twitter for a while. After all, everyone knows that it’s laces out (away from kicker) rather than laces in (facing the kicker).
