Alabama’s Sunseri Interviews At Pitt

Reports yesterday had longtime Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Bradley ticketed to Pittsburgh as the Panthers’ third coach in — oh — about three weeks.  Not so say Pitt officials.

Which means Alabama linebackers coach Sal Sunseri is still in the running.

Sunseri pursued the Pitt job when Dave Wannstedt was ousted in December.  But Panthers AD Steve Pederson — the same man who hired Bill Callahan at Nebraska — hired Mike Haywood from Miami of Ohio.  Haywood then quickly got arrested on a domestic violence beef and the job reopened.  (How long before Pederson’s job comes open?)

Sunseri interviewed for the job at his alma mater yesterday.  He was an All-American linebacker at Pitt under Jackie Sherrill in the late-70s/early-80s.

Sunseri joined Nick Saban’s staff in 2009 replacing Lance Thompson who had moved on to Tennessee.

Wannstedt Won’t Coach Against UK In Bowl Game

The ‘stache has coached his last game for Pittsburgh.  Ousted head coach Dave Wannstedt has decided — rather late in the process — that he will not coach his Panthers in their bowl game against Kentucky.

Defensive coordinator Phil Bennett will serve as Pitt’s interim coach in the BBVA Compass Bowl on Saturday.

Wannstedt was Pitt’s most successful coach since the days of Jackie Sherrill and Johnny Majors, but that wasn’t enough to save him after a disappointing 7-5 season.

Former Miami (Ohio) coach Mike Haywood was hired to replace him, but he was fired on Saturday after being jailed on a felony domestic violence charge.

Wannstedt’s decision could be good news for Kentucky.  The Wildcats will no longer be facing a squad trying to send its coach out as a winner.

Dave Wannstedt out as Pitt coach

We were told this might be a possiblity.  If Wannstedt coaches the bowl game, which he has reportedly been given the opportunity to do, his team will most likely be pumped to send him out a winner.

UK To Face A Wannstedt-less Pitt

It looks like the much-anticipated Dave Wannstedt vs. Joker Phillips coaching showdown won’t come to pass after all.  (Yes.  Sarcasm.)

Pittsburgh’s coach is resigning after six season at his alma mater.  Offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti Jr. is expected to take over as the Panthers’ interim coach for the bowl season.

Pitt will face Kentucky on January 8th in the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham.

Wannstedt’s team was favored to win the Big East — and it did win a share of the crown — but a 7-5 finish did him in.  Just last year Pitt won 10 games.
