WR Carter Finally Cleared At Alabama

It took a lot longer than expected, but former Ohio State then juco wide receiver Duron Carter has been admitted as a student at Alabama.  He could begin practicing today.

The son of former NFL great Cris Carter had his enrollment slowed due to a transcript issue.

Viewed by some as the sure-fire replacement for Julio Jones, it will be interesting to see how long it takes Carter to get up to speed… considering the fact that he’s missed weeks of practice time.

Ex-NFL’er Carter Discusses Son’s Eligibility Issues At Bama

Juco transfer Duron Carter was expected to help pick up some of the slack left by Julio Jones’ departure from Tuscaloosa.  Instead the wide receiver is on the sideline awaiting eligibility clearance from the NCAA.

His father — ex-NFL great Cris Carter – sounds like he’s growing weary of the process (and of the rumors swirling about his son’s status):

“Someone made a mistake.  If I had know this was going to be a problem we could have taken care of it in July.  But someone made a mistake and Duron is having to pay for it.  It should be worked out soon enough.  Alabama has the best compliance department in the country, and Duron will be at practice as soon as possible. …

Coach (Nick) Saban and Alabama have tuck by Duron from the beginning.  We knew this was going to be a rocky process, and Coach Saban and Alabama haven’t wavered one bit.  We’re not wavering either.  Duron’s playing (at) Alabama.”

Carter told TideSports.com that his son’s timetable “just depends on when the grades come in and are added to the transcript.”

The younger Carter began his career at Ohio State before going the juco route last season.

Bama Still Waiting For Word On WR Carter

Still waiting.

That’s the situation in Tuscaloosa where transfer wide receiver Duron Carter has been held out of a full week of practice while Alabama officials await final approval of the player’s junior college transcript.

Carter — who began his career at Ohio State before transferring to Coffeyville Community College in Kansas — is expected to have a major impact for the Tide.  In fact, he’s likely to wear the #8 jersey worn by Julio Jones last year.  (He can probably run over to T-Town Menswear to pick one up.)

Carter’s father is former NFL great Cris Carter.

Report: Former Buckeye Carter Headed To Alabama

Former Ohio State wide receiver Duron Carter has committed to Alabama, according to a report from ESPN’s Joe Schad.

Carter, who left Ohio State after the 2009 season because of academic reasons, spent last fall at Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College.

Carter would be eligible to play at Alabama this fall. The Crimson Tide are looking for help replacing star receiver Julio Jones, who left Alabama early to enter the NFL Draft.

The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Carter was an All-American at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He caught 44 passes for 690 yards and 10 touchdowns at Coffeyville last year.

Carter, who is the son of former Ohio State and NFL receiver Cris Carter, has also taken visits to LSU and Miami. Cris Carter hinted this week that Alabama might be the right spot for his son.

“The head coach (Nick Saban) is as good as it gets,” Carter told TideInsider.com. “They have structure. Nick Saban provides the kind of environment you look for . There is no better teacher in the game than Nick and his staff. We like the fact that they run a pro-style offense. They have a need at the receiver position. They don’t have a (big, physical) receive like Duron right now.”

Duron Carter appeared to confirm the report with his Twitter post on Saturday afternoon: “Ya its true lol…..”

UPDATE — Cris Carter has confirmed to ESPN that his son will play football for Alabama this fall.

“We just met with Coach Saban and he’s committed,” Carter said. “It’s a combination of the coaching and the structure and for Duron’s maturity. All of those things make it a good match.”

Duron Carter plans to graduate from Coffeyville in May and enroll at Alabama in June.
