Trent Richardson must be Nick Saban’s kind of guy. Asked about Alabama’s remaining schedule, the running back sounded like a coach as he listed the potential pitfalls ahead.
“The schedule is going to be tough. We’ve got LSU, we have to go to Death Valley, Mississippi State, Auburn. Mississippi State isn’t a step behind anybody else. Then we get Cam Newton, a big quarterback who is pretty fast, and they have a good defense. I don’t even know if we had 100 yards rushing (against Auburn) last year. It’s going to be a big game for the running backs, and the offensive line, too, because we’ve got a lot to earn.”
As we’ve pointed out before, we often hear pop-off comments from players on team’s with poor records. Vanderbilt’s Zac Stacy ran his mouth before his team lost to LSU. Ditto Tennessee’s Gerald Jones. Ole Miss’ Jerrell Powe downgraded Alabama before his Rebels lost to them.
Yet here’s a guy that’s talking up his team’s remaining foes — well, not Georgia State — and he’s playing on club that’s lost just one game in the last year and a half.
Conclusion: Pre-game bravado and swagger is usually nothing more than a doomed player whistling past the graveyard and trying to prop up his own confidence.
