Confirmed: Auburn Wide Receiver Jaylon Denson Done For The Year

jaylon densonAuburn junior receiver Jaylon Denson injured his leg Saturday, reportedly tearing the patellar tendon in his left leg.  Coach Gus Malzahn confirmed today that Denson’s season is over.

“That’s a pretty tough injury with that and that’s a big blow for our offense. He was our most consistent guy, so it’s going to have to be by-committee from here on out.”

Denson had three catches for 45 yards.  Injuries are nothing new to Auburn this year.  Five defensive starters have missed at least one game this season.

“Then to lose a guy like Jaylon Denson is a huge blow, but that creates opportunities for other people and the good thing is for the future is we’re playing a whole bunch of young guys and that’ll do nothing but help us for the future.”

Auburn is off this week before facing Ole Miss on October 5.

Coach Gus Malzahn tapped JUCO Transfer Nick Marshall to be the starter with the season opening game just two weeks away.

“Nick Marshall has emerged and earned the right to be our starting quarterback,” Malzahn said in a statement. “As I’ve said, we wanted to go with the guy that gives us the best opportunity to win football games and Nick is that guy.”

Marshall started his career as a defensive back at Georgia.  He was dismissed following his freshman season, reportedly for his involvement in stealing money from another student.  After Georgia, Marshall transferred to Garden City (Kansas) Community College.

While Marshall gets a second chance Auburn, safety Demetruce McNeal’s career as a Tiger is over. He was dismissed from the team this morning following an arrest for possession of marijuana.

“After visiting with Demetruce, I made the decision to dismiss him from our team,” Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said in a statement Saturday afternoon. “We have high expectations both on and off the field for our players.”

McNeal had 90 tackles last season, the most of any returning player.
