SEC Recruiting Headlines 7/23/2013

recruiting-headlines-gfx1. Alabama sticker doesn’t go over well at a Florida State camp.  Coach tells player to remove it.

2. Offensive lineman Josh Casher opens up his recruitment, decommits from Auburn.  ”I just felt that it wasn’t fair to me or to Auburn to kind of string them along when I’m having doubts.” Alabama and Florida two of the schools in pursuit.

3. Casher’s St. Paul teammate, linebacker Tre Williams, visited both Alabama and Auburn last week.  Still committed to Tigers.

4. Former Alabama lineman Chance Warmack has a younger brother who wants to play for the Crimson Tide.

5. Missouri gets a wide receiver out of the state of Florida.  Former Tennessee commit Lawrence Lee says he wants to play for the Tigers. 15th commitment for the Tigers 2014 class.

6. Here’s a roundup of South Carolina recruiting news. Gamecocks already have four commitments in the class of 2015.

7. Linebacker  Bryson Allen-Williams has committed to South Carolina but that hasn’t stopped other schools from pursuing him.

SEC Headlines 2/23/2013

1. Georgia reserve tight end Ty Flournoy-Smith arrested Friday night. The misdemeanor charge involves a false report of stolen textbooks.  Authorities believe Flournoy-Smith sold the books himself. Mark Richt aware of arrest.

2. New offensive coordinator Cam Cameron’s contract at LSU calls for a $1 million buyout.

3. Former Texas A&M running back Christine Michael still doesn’t understand why he didn’t play in the Cotton Bowl against Oklahoma.  ”I had no clue that I wasn’t going to play not a down in that game. It was shocking to me, and it still shocks me to this day.”

4. With defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson’s 4-2-5 defense, Auburn wants big safeties: “We’re going to put one more body up there than you can block, and try to disrupt the blocking schemes instead of trying to physically overpower offensive linemen.”

5. Defensive end might be the deepest unit for Mississippi State this fall. Can five-star recruit Chris Jones start as a freshman?

6. Young defensive ends spark optimism at Ole Miss as well.

NFL Scouting Combine

7. Offensive lineman Chance Warmack on his time at Alabama: “It’s like a mini-NFL.” Why “Warmacking” may come to an end in the NFL.

8. Former Alabama tackle D.J. Fluker: “I want to be the Ray Lewis of my offensive line.”

9. Running back Eddie Lacy won’t run the 40-yard dash at the combine because of an ailing hamstring.

10. A school-record 13 players at the combine from LSU includes as many as four potential first-round picks.

11. A focus for Alabama today – stopping LSU’s Johnny O’Bryant.  Averaging 21.5 points and 10 rebounds over the last four games.

12. Another big man that’s found a groove is Vanderbilt’s Rod Odom – averaging 15.2 points last five games.

13. Tennessee’s shared history with Texas A&M – each program’s best player was Bernard King.

14. Mizzou point guard Phil Pressey has been a lightning rod for criticism.  Does his second-half performance against Florida mean he’s getting better?

15. John Calipari is not  a fan the late start time to tonight’s game against Missouri.  ”I hate it at 9 o’clock.” (Eastern time)

1. LSU expected to make the hiring of Cam Cameron official on Friday.

2. Should Jadeveon Clowney challenge the NFL rule that prevents him from entering the draft before 2014?

3. Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham’s spin on his defense that lost 12 guys that started at least two games: “We’ve got nine starters coming back who started in one game or more last year.”

4. Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen on new assistant Billy Gonzales.“Just about everywhere he’s gone, his receivers have broken records. The opportunity to get one of the best receiver coaches in the country is huge.”

5. Bulldogs could lose one of their quarterback signees – Cord Sandberg could go in the first round of the baseball draft.  Mullen: “If he goes really high, if he goes in the first round of the baseball draft, hey, I’m happy for him, proud for him.”

6. Mark Stoops has lost one of his four JUCO signees.  Cornerback Nate Willis headed to Division II. 

7. Florida lost three of its top four receivers, but with five freshman coming in, there should be healthy competition this fall.

8. Arkansas coach Bret Bielema issued a statement Wednesday night on defensive end Austin Flynn’s DWI arrest: “I will review the matter and it will be handled swiftly and decisively.”

15. Kiper thinks Auburn defensive end Corey Lemonier could land in the second round of the draft.

Nerlens Noel Reaction

16. Deadspin on Nerlens Noel season-ending torn ACL. “Noel won’t be the last player we see writhing on the ground in pain, his future possibly evaporating in front of him while NCAA and NBA cash in.”

17. ESPN draft analyst on Noel: “I’d be shocked, unless something happens in rehab, if he goes lower than No. 5.”

18. Sports Illustrated writer:  ”Before the injury, he was going to be a top-five pick in this year’s draft. After the injury … same deal.”

19. Florida coach Billy Donovan on Noel: “The injury came from a hustle play and it kind of embodies who he is as a player.”

28. South Carolina tries to break four-game losing streak tonight against a team they’ve already defeated on the road. With a 12-11 record, this looks to be Frank Martin’s first non-20 win season in six years as a college head coach.
