Bama Teammates, Fans Defend Kicker From Twitter Fools

638-moronWelcome to the Twitter age.  People losing their ability to communicate in any form that requires more than 140 characters’ worth of thought.  Cowards and buffoons empowered to send ugly, threatening comments to people they may or may not even know.  A rising sea of snark, sarcasm and cynicism washing us over us all.

If you like being a nogoodnik smartass on Twitter, you are part of the problem.  (And don’t forget you can follow us on Twitter right here!)

Sadly, never is Twitter nastier, more cruel, or more unhinged than when the topic is sports.  Once again, the SEC is at Ground Zero of a nut job uprising.  This time, Alabama placekicker Cade Foster — who missed three field goals against Auburn on Saturday (in a 34-28 loss) — has received death threats from Bama’s Harvey Updyke/Fringe Nation.

Thankfully, the majority of the Alabama fanbase has piped up and launched a “bamafans4cade” Facebook page.  One UA sophomore actually wrote an open letter to Foster on her blog apologizing for “fake” Alabama fans who had launched a verbal assault on him.

Bravo to Kaitlin Goins and the many Crimson Tide fans who’ve shown their support to Foster via Facebook.  It’s good to see there are a few rational folks still out there.

Meanwhile, the ugliness directed at Foster has brought out the best in his teammates.  Quarterback AJ McCarron tweeted the following:

Linebacker CJ Mosley was a bit more harsh in his response:

Couldn’t have said that one better myself.

Yeah, it’s the world we live in.  But as Foster’s teammates and the majority of Alabama fans are proving, we don’t have to put up with it.  That’s why we reference these kinds of things on the site.  If everyone took a “crap happens” attitude, the problem would only get worse.  Hopefully, by calling attention to nonsense like this, one or two folks might stop, re-think their actions, and delete their next 140-character threat before they send it.
