Defensive Back Lanier Commits To Vols

Defensive back Izauea Lanier has committed to Tennessee.

Lanier, who attends East Mississippi Community College in Scooba, Miss., had also been considering Ole Miss. UT defensive backs coach Terry Joseph was influential in helping Lanier choosing the Vols.

“Cach Joseph has been great,” Lanier told “He has stuck with me through everything. When I didn’t get things done to get out in December, coach Joseph never backed off. He kept telling me how much he wanted me and needed me.”

Lanier is UT’s 21st commitment for the class of 2011. Six of those players have enrolled for the spring semester. It will be interesting to see if Lanier’s commitment affects the decision of junior college defensive back Byron Moore, who’s expected to choose between UT and Miami.

Lanier originally signed with Auburn in 2009 but failed to qualify. He was considered the nation’s 54th best athlete that year by

Vols A Finalist For Defensive Back Moore

Tennessee appears to be one of two finalists with a chance to land defensive back Byron Moore from Los Angeles Harbor City Community College.

Moore, who took an official visit this weekend to Oregon State, told the Beavers aren’t among his top two choices.

“I enjoyed myself at Oregon State this weekend,” Moore said. “They have a lot of new facilities they are building and the coaches are great. I’m going to sit down this week and think about it hard. Right now Miami and Tennessee are my main two choices.”

Moore will take an official visit to Miami next weekend before he makes his final decision. He plans to announce his choice on National Signing Day on Feb. 2, although he could decide before that day.

Moore signed with Southern Cal in 2009 and spent the fall as a member of the Trojans. He will have three years to play three at the school he chooses.
