Does Your Team Recruit Memphis? Better Be Careful!

On Friday, news broke that a guidance counselor at Memphis’ Wooddale High School had resigned after admitting to doctoring the transcript of Auburn football signee Jovon Robinson.  Robinson was pulled from the Tigers’ preseason practice sessions.

Today, Kyle Veazey of The Memphis Commercial-Appeal reports that the NCAA recently let the football coach at another Memphis school know that the city is now under surveillance, if you will.  According to Central High’s Lynord Crutchfield:

“They were just saying to let me know they would be watching Memphis, because Memphis is on their radar.”

From basketball recruiting to the Albert Means mess that brought down Alabama football, the Bluff City has always been known as a hotbed/dirtbed for college recruiters.  It’s not just the Mississippi River that’s muddy in Memphis.  The question is, just how closely is the NCAA examining the situation in that town now?

Crutchfield wouldn’t specify what the NCAA talked to him about, saying only: “Just different things in the city, different players in the city, coaches.”

SEC football and basketball coaches, you’ve been warned.  The NCAA is eyeballing Memphis.  From college transcripts — in the case of Robinson — to Lord knows what else.  All this at a time when new hoops coaches at Arkansas, Mississippi State and Tennessee try to establish pipelines into the city.

Beware.
