Alright, so “love” might be too strong a word, but I do think CBS analyst Gary Danielson is one of the best in the business.

He makes good observations, isn’t afraid to say some pointed things, and breaks the game down in a conversational style.

And, oh yeah, he shares my view that “The Spread” offense as something that’s faddish now, but will start to disappear eventually.

I wrote on this site last week that teams need to have at least two quarterbacks on their roster that can both run and pass with equal effectiveness (and one of those guys is hard to find, much less two)… and they need to be tough because they’re going to take too many hits in the spread system.

Defensive coordinators are already starting to employ safety/linebacker hybrids to counteract the offense.

In my personal opinion, you’ll continue to see teams use special players in “Wild Hog” type formations (5-10 plays per game)… and you’ll see smaller schools continue to run it (just as service academy teams tend to run triple option schemes), but the days of everyone switching to The Spread are coming to a quick close.

Here’s Danielson’s take:  “I’m not a spread guy.  I’ve never been a spread guy.  I think it’s peaked and it’s going to go the opposite way… I don’t mean grind it out football.  I think every team will have to have their four- and three-receiver sets, but I think in the future these coaches are going to realize they have to be able to turn around and hand the ball off to the tailback, too.”
