The best team in Vanderbilt history, huh?  Wasn’t that the question that a Nashville paper put to former Commodore players last week?

I guess the answer arrived on Saturday in Vandy’s humiliating 20-10 loss to Tennessee, a team that had lost to Wyoming in their previous game.

Look, I take nothing away from what Bobby Johnson has done.  He has made Vandy competitive in the SEC.  That’s an amazing feat.  But, as I’ve said on this site before, to escape Nashville (if he even wants to), he’ll need to post an 8- or even 9-win season.

No fanbase will accept a coach who’s never had a winning D1 record.  Not even Clemson, I would guess.

And remember this… though Vandy is finally bowl eligible, if they lose at Wake Forest on Saturday and then lose their bowl game, once again VU will have a losing record for the season (6-7).

Sorry Vandy fans, but welcome back to earth.

As for Saturday’s loss, Vandy had just one real highlight during the game — senior Reshard Langford’s 42-yard interception return for a touchdown.

In a lowlight, Vandy lost defensive end Broderick Stewart for the rest of the season when he broke his left ankle against Tennessee.  Stewart, who’s already undergone surgery on the injury, was VU’s leader in sacks.

Alright, so why did the Commodores look so bad on Saturday?  “We came out a little flat,” said receiver George Smith.  “We were not ready to play,” said quarterback Mackenzi Adams.

Center Bradley Vierling agreed.  “We didn’t have the same energy we had last week.  We needed to come out like we did against Kentucky — fired up, anxious.”

That’s bad for Vanderbilt, but what does it say about Tennessee?  The Vols are so bad that even Vandy couldn’t get up for them?
