In what’s bad news for Georgia (and good news for the rest of the SEC East), quarterback Matthew Stafford and tailback Knowshon Moreno are both heading to the NFL.
That would be the SEC’s leading passer and the SEC leading rusher for 2008.
It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the players are leaving. There’s an uncertain future in the NFL right now. There’s talk of rookie salary caps, strikes and lock-outs.
Sadly, it makes sense for two of the SEC’s best players to leave early, get their money and then come back to school for a degree if they want to get one.
Normally, players don’t want to risk injury by returning. This year’s juniors are having to weigh their long-time earning potential as well.
If a player comes into the league now, he’ll get an extra season’s worth of paychecks before the league goes on strike or suffers through a lock-out in a couple of years.
Bad for Georgia, but a solid business decision by both players… who project as first round picks.
