Things are not getting any easier in Lexington.
A week after losing its top wide receiver, Dicky Lyons Jr., to a season-ending knee injury, Kentucky learned Monday that tailback Derrick Locke tore both his ACL and MCL against Arkansas and will require season-ending surgery.
Locke leads the Cats in rushing with 303 yards on 63 carries and is the second-leading receiver with 23 catches for 195 yards.
To make matters worse, the banged-up Cats will also be without defensive tackle Myron Pryor, who suffered a high ankle sprain against Arkansas, when they travel to The Swamp to take on No. 5 Florida, who comes in well-rested.
But, just imagine if Kentucky was heading to Gainesville after a loss.
Without Locke, the Cats are going to rely heavily on tailback Alfonso Smith, who’s rushed for 179 yards on 36 carries this season. They’ll also look for more contribution from Moncell Allen and Tony Dixon.
The Herald-Leader’s Mark Story doesn’t blame UK fans for leaving Saturday’s comeback victory early. It was cold and windy, and the Cats had shown nothing to suggest that they’d score 14 points in the closing minutes.
Still, Story writes, “Those who left early Saturday paid a steep price. They missed a UK comeback for the ages.”
