Coaching changes in Columbia!

Steve Spurrier fired offensive line coach John Hunt yesterday, though he said he didn’t want to blame him for all of the offensive woes this year.  Hunt has been with Spurrier at Florida, with the Washington Redskins and in Columbia.

“I don’t agree with the decision, but I respect coach Spurrier’s decision,” Hunt said.  “I appreciate the opportunity he game me.  I enjoyed my time in South Carolina and wish the Gamecocks the best in the future.”

It was also announced yesterday that recruiting coordinator David Reaves (son of John and one of the nation’s Top 25 recruiters according to Rivals.com) was heading to Tennessee to join brother-in-law Lane Kiffin’s new Volunteer staff.  He’ll be replaced by Shane Beamer in the interim.

That leaves two vacancies on Spurrier’s staff heading into the bowl game.

As for Saturday’s 31-14 loss to Clemson, Weslye Saunders and Jasper Brinkley stood out in a positive way for the Cocks.

Quarterback Chris Smelley stood out in a negative way… tossing four interceptions and handing the quarterback reins back over to Stephen Garcia.  Spurrier has decided to start Garcia in the bowl game, which more than likely will be played in Garcia’s hometown of Tampa (the Outback Bowl is USC’s likely destination).
