Tony Barnhart of The AJC gets a little rough in his weekend flashback. Fans of Georgia, Tennessee and Mississippi State need to be prepared:
1) Something is wrong at Georgia. — Here’s a little more of his take: “…there is something missing in the Georgia program. This team made too many mistakes and penalties and never got better in that phase of the game. Head coach Mark Richt says that he is not planning any staff changes. But it is the job of the head coach to identify the problem and fix it. Richt needs to examine every phase of his program because there is something wrong.”
2) Lane Kiffin is a big risk at Tennessee. — Here’s part of his take: “This may turn out to be a very good hire, especially if Kiffin’s dad, Monte, signs on as defensive coordinator. But it feels a little like Mike Shula to Alabama.”
3) Mississippi State made a mistake. — Here’s part of his take: “The fact is that the powers that be wanted (Sylvester Croom) to make more staff changes than he thought appropriate so that he had no choice but to resign. … Mississippi State is getting national criticism for this decision and it should.”
First of all, I liked Croom as a coach. But if he wasn’t willing to make a pretty fair amount of staff changes to an offensive staff that had accomplished very little in five years, then MSU’s hands were tied.
Doesn’t what Barnhart wrote about Richt apply to Croom? “… it is the job of the head coach to identify the problem and fix it.” Croom never did when it came to the offensive side of the ball.
