Barnhart: Florida Just Getting Started

Permalink Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

Tony Barnhart of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution writes in his latest blog that Georgia fans are in for some bad news: “The Gators, it appears, are just getting started.”

Mr. Barnhart is writing to a Georgia audience, but he could just as easily be sending this warning to every corner of the SEC.

In February of 2007, Urban Meyer told the writer that he wasn’t pleased with the state of his program… just a month after winning the national title.

“Too many people focused on themselves.  Not enough people focused on the team and each other.  We are going to change that,” the coach said.

Fast-forward to now and the words of “Mr. College Football”:

“Of the 24 players on the offensive depth chart against Oklahoma, 18 still have eligibility remaining for 2009.

“The defense that held the nation’s highest scoring team to only two touchdowns did not have a senior among its top 22 players.”

And this blog was written BEFORE Tim Tebow announced he would be returning to campus.  Before positive vibes started to percolate out of Gainesville about Brandon Spikes and Percy Harvin also possibly staying.

“I’m never comfortable using the ‘dynasty’ word,” writes Mr. Barnhart.  “It’s too vague.  But what Florida appears to be doing is putting together a program that can have a Southern California kind of run.”
