AROUND THE SEC ON TURKEY DAY

Permalink Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

Here’s a cornucopia of tidbits, columns and blurbs from across the Southeast:

John Patton of The Gainesville Sun believes that the Big 12 might have better quarterbacks this year, but next year Jevan Snead, Randall Cobb, Kodi Burns and Jordan Jefferson might be ready for breakout years.

The Big 12’s tie-breaker rules allow for the BCS standings to be used to settle a three-way division tie (like the one that’s likely to play out in the Big 12 South).  That means SEC coaches Tommy Tuberville, Steve Spurrier, Mark Richt, Urban Meyer, Les Miles, Phillip Fulmer and Sylvester Croom might have a say in who Alabama or Florida might play in the BCS title game.

According to Columbia’s The State, here are three things we’ve learned this year:

1)  Houston Nutt did take advantage of Ed Orgeron’s recruiting, just as expected.

2)  Tennessee safety Eric Berry would have gotten Heisman consideration… if his team had been better.

3)  Gainesville will be a busy place in the next month with assistant coaches Dan Mullen, Charlie Strong and Dan McCarney all being mentioned in connection to open head coaching jobs.

Finally, Travis Haney of The Charleston Post and Courier compares the Big 12 to the SEC team-by-team, East versus South, West versus North:

Florida over Texas
Oklahoma over Georgia
Texas Tech over Vanderbilt
Oklahoma State over South Carolina
Kentucky over Baylor
Tennessee over Texas A&M
Alabama over Missouri
Ole Miss over Nebraska
Kansas over LSU
Colorado over Auburn
Kansas State over Mississippi State
Arkansas over Iowa State

That’s 6-6 in his view.  Click here to read his reasoning on each game.
