OUR TAKE: If a player is projected as a second round pick, there’s a 50/50 chance he won’t get drafted at all, it seems. So even though several mock drafts had Weems going in the mid-second, there were no guarantees (ask Jamont Gordon). So as far as MrSEC is concerned, Weems being selected as the third player out of the SEC needs to be viewed as a LITTLE bit of a surprise.
The Morning News of Northwest Arkansas reports that Weems being traded from Chicago to Denver on draft night might be the best thing for him. The Bulls have depth at the guard position, while the Nuggets have two stars (Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony) but little more behind them.
The Northwest Arkansas times relates that Denver’s VP of basketball operations is in love with Weems’ athletic ability: “World class. He’s so athletic that he can fit in the NBA as an energy guy.”
You also have to wonder if the Nuggest VP of player personnel Rex Chapman might have picked up the phone and called John Pelphrey, who redshirted at Kentucky during King Rex’ final season in Lexington.
