CAROLINA FOOTBALL NOTES - 8/6/08

Yesterday's big news in Columbia was Steve Spurrier's hot-headed reaction to a big hit delivered by a linebacker to one of his receivers... which led to an O Vs D skirmish.

But Joseph Person of The State reveals that there may be a bit of back-story to all of this.  According to his blog, "this is not the first time this summer there has been an offense-versus-defense scuffle."

Spurrier could have been trying to fend off in-fighting on his team.

"It's not going to be offense versus defense as long as I'm coach.  We're going to learn to practice against each other the right way, protect your teammates.  I've always believed in that, and always will."

Nice insight from Mr. Person, who's a pretty good guy (and not just because he drove halfway across East Tennessee to do a guest bit on my TV show back in 2003).

Spurrier was much happier with the team's practice effort yesterday:  "We practiced like a team.  We got a lot out of it.  We had a little bumping around and so forth.  It was a pretty good practice."

Jarriel King is impressing offensive line coach John Hunt, according to this notes column.

Hunt is cautiously optimistic about his O-line, a unit that failed to live up to Spurrier's expectations last year:  "Coach was real optimistic about us last year, a lot more optimistic than I was, and kind of jazzed everybody up. ... This year I'm coming in with a lot more optimism because they've had multiple summers now working hard."

Carolina has inked a new deal with Fox SportSouth that will result in 12 football replays, eight live non-conference basketball games, and the airing of both Spurrier's and Darrin Horn's television shows.

And here's The State's "stock report" after yesterday's practice.
