FLORIDA FOOTBALL NEWS - 9/24/08
Florida fans continue to worry about their team's offense, but the media continues to buy in to Urban Meyer's more conservative approach. Take Robbie Andreu of The Gainesville Sun. He writes, "The more I think about Urban Meyer's no-risk approach on offense, the more brilliant it seems." Brilliant might be a tad strong, but I agree with him that Meyer is winning football games by wide margins, so why break a sweat on offense when you don't have to?
Though Florida's attack is piling up the victories, it isn't piling up the votes for Tim Tebow in the latest Scripps-Howard Heisman Trophy poll. Tebow is currently third in the poll behind Chase Daniel of Missouri and Sam Bradford of Oklahoma. And I'm guessing Tebow could care less as long as his team keeps on winning.
Jeremy Fowler of The Orlando Sentinel caught up with offensive coordinator Dan Mullen and chatted with him about his offense. The gist of Fowler's one-on-one is summed up by the author himself: "Here's why Mullen loves his offense right now. Even if you don't." (To see those reasons, just click this little ol' bitty link right here.)
Looking ahead to Ole Miss, the Gators are dealing with several nagging injuries heading into Saturday's 12:30pm (EST) kickoff.
Defensive end Jermaine Cunningham is one of the guys that's banged up. He was seen on crutches yesterday after hyper-extending his knee against Tennessee. Meyer said an MRI revealed no ligament or cartilage damage to the knee and that Cunningham is "probable" for Saturday.
Florida is preparing for the first real test of their defense this year. Take it from Gator defensive line coach Dan McCarney, who believes the Rebels are more dangerous than last week's opponent, Tennessee. "I don't think there's any doubt they are. For what I've seen, I think their offense is definitely better than Tennessee's."
We've covered offense and defense, but what about the Gators' game-changing special teams units... a hallmark of Meyer-coached teams. "It's not interesting to people, but that's how you win. If you want to win, that's how you do it." We'll see if Houston Nutt is crazy enough to punt to Brandon James.
