FLORIDA FOOTBALL NEWS - 9/22/08
Florida's young football team (37 freshmen and sophomores on the travel squad, no senior starters on defense) impressed Urban Meyer with their dominant win in Knoxville Saturday. "Our first team, we were not a good football team. We had some good players. We embarrassed ourselves on the road. The second year (2006) we were a very good team. Very good team, very good chemistry, good toughness, and we won on the road. Third year, not very good. Very young, immature, bad chemisty. Not a good team. ... This one (over Tennessee), that showed a little bit of toughness right there."
In case you've forgotten, the Gators won the national title in 2006.
Meyer especially likes his line play. "I'm confident as a coach to see both sides of the ball containing the lines of scrimmage. That's where you win the game."
In my view, the difference for Florida this year appears to be the Gators' defense. While the offense looks rather pedestrian, it's the improvement on the other side of the ball that makes UF a Top 5 team.
Here's one pretty impressive stat from the Gators' offense: three games played, zero turnovers. Now that's how you win championships.
Jeremy Fowler of The Orlando Sentinel believes Ole Miss' Jevan Snead might be the best quarterback the Gators have faced so far.
