Matt Jones cut by Jaguars after stay in jail

Matt Jones was cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars today. The news comes two days after the former Arkansas star was released from a five-night stay in jail for violating drug court requirements stemming from a cocaine possession arrest last summer.

Matt Jones

Jones failed an alcohol test Feb. 27 and admitted to Circuit Court Judge Mary Ann Gunn last week that he had been drinking on a golf course with friends last month. Jones has undergone drug and alcohol tests as part of his participation in the drug court program, which Jones was granted to participate in after being arrested last July for cocaine possession. That’s when police say they found Jones in the back of a vehicle near Dickson Street cutting up cocaine with a Foot Locker card.

Here’s more from the Jags’ general manager via the Associated Press:

“All roster moves are decisions we feel are in the best interest of the organization,” Jaguars general manager Gene Smith said. “This decision is a result of our ongoing player and roster evaluations. We expect responsibility and accountability, and those are important qualities as we continue the process of building this team.”

What’s next for Jones? No clue. Even if he does get picked up by a team, he lost quite a bit of money with his arrest last summer and his subsequent failure in drug court.

The AP mentions the admiration Arkansas fans have for Jones. It’s never been that way in Jacksonville.

Although Jones was wildly popular in Arkansas, he wasn’t revered nearly as much in Jacksonville. Fans thought his laid-back attitude was a sign he didn’t care about football, and coach Jack Del Rio ripped him at times for his work ethic.

Jones’ reputation has definitely taken a hit. Woody Bassett, Jones’ lawyer, said Saturday that “no one should give up on Matt. To do so would be wrong.”

Today, the Jags gave up on Jones.
