UPDATED: UA not ranked in AP, coaches’ polls
Arkansas didn’t make either major Top 25 poll today. The AP Poll was released a few minutes ago, and Arkansas received the third-most votes in the “others receiving votes” category to place 28th in the mythical, extended version of the media rankings. The Hogs weren’t close to making the USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Top 25.
Here’s the update from this morning concerning the coaches’ poll:
Arkansas garnered some votes but didn’t make it into the field of 25 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Top 25 poll this afternoon. The Hogs received 27 points and are 36th if you extended the 25-team poll.
Not a surprising development. I wonder if Razorbacks coach John Pelphrey voted for his Hogs. He’s a part of the 31-member Board of Coaches that participate in the poll.
UPDATE (3:45 p.m.): Pelphrey was asked about his ballot today at his afternoon press conference. He wasn’t too sure if he voted for Arkansas in the coaches’ poll because, well, the UA basketball coaching staff usually partakes in casting the ballot.
Coach said he wasn’t too consumed by the rankings. He just guessed that one SEC team was in the poll this week. (He’s right, Tennessee is 25th in the coaches’ poll.)
“I certainly hope there comes a day where we’re never outside the top 25, because I think that’s where Arkansas belongs,” Pelphrey said. “I think that’s what history says. But once we get there, the season’s not over with that stuff either.
“I’m just not real consumed with it. Certainly you’d rather be ranked than not ranked, make no mistake about that. But whether we are or aren’t, it’s not going to help us against Texas. I have not looked. I have no clue where that stuff sits or lies.”
Arkansas hosts No. 7 (AP/ESPN) Texas on Tuesday at 8:05 p.m. in Bud Walton Arena.
After North Carolina’s 85-78 loss at home to Boston College last night in its ACC opener, Pittsburgh claimed the No. 1 spot in the poll. It’s the first No. 1 ranking ever in men’s basketball for the athletics department there, which was once led by second-year UA athletics director Jeff Long.
