Coaches rarely gush. They praise. They share optimism. But they rarely gush.
Gus Malzahn, however, is gushing about Auburn's linebacker situation with Cassanova McKinzy and Kris Frost. The second-year Tiger coach says defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson is glad to have some proven talent at his weakside and middle linebacker spots:
"With those two, specifically, Coach Johnson's got a lot of information. I know he feels good going into the season with the information he has...
I think Coach Johnson would say we're light years ahead of where we were last year with our linebacker situation, because he knows more about them. He's got some flexibility with our other guys, too."
While Auburn returns three of its top four linebackers, Johnson says he's now concerned about depth behind guys like McKinzy and Frost. "I think I had 12 linebackers one time last year in spring ball, full speed, and this year, the most I ever had was six."
There. That sounds more like a coach.
