SOUTH CAROLINA 34 - NC STATE 0

While Vandy was looking surprisingly good, Carolina was looking surprisingly bad.

Tommy Beecher threw four interceptions before leaving the game with an injury.  Chris Smelley than came in and looked much more productive, possibly forcing Steve Spurrier to reverse his “Beecher’s my guy” pledge after one lone week.

Mike Davis couldn’t get rolling until the fourth quarter.  And to be honest, it was only after NC State’s starting quarterback was knocked out of the game that USC began to take advantage of Wolfpack mistakes.

Not a good showing for USC’s offense, despite what the scoreboard said.  Their defense?  Again, NC State was handcuffed at quarterback, but there’s no question that this unit will be the high point of Spurrier’s team again this year.

We’ll start with a game report out of The Charleston Post and Courier.

Here’s the game story
from The State.  Included are Spurrier’s thoughts on the quarterback quandry.  “Yes, it is up (for) debate.  We’re going to try to put the best guy out there to win the ballgame.  If we think Chris Smelley’s the best guy, we’ll put him out there.”

Ken Burger of the CP&C writes that this year’s Cock squad looks a lot like last year’s team.  I concur.

Last night’s win didn’t answer a lot of questions, but it did show the potential of USC’s D.

The defense was so good (shutting out NC State, forcing four turnovers including two that REALLY helped the offense) that new defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson was given the gameball by Spurrier.

Wolfpack freshman quarterback Russell Wilson left the field immobilized on a cart following what turned out to be “just” a concussion.

Here’s a notes column that includes coverage of: Kenny McKinley’s 34th straight game with a catch (someone wrote 30 yesterday), Davis’ night at tailback, and how Emanuel Cook’s on-field push-ups turned a fourth down for NC State into a first down (it’s called unsportsmanlike conduct, kid).

Finally, here’s how Carolina did when it came to Joe Person’s “keys to success.”  So-so.
