The SEC’s Happiest Fanbase In 2013 Was…

Happy-EmployeesEach January, we at MrSEC.com like to take a look back at the year that was and determine which SEC fanbases tasted victory most often.  It’s our party, our rules.  And here’s how those rules work:

1.  We look at wins in only the two revenue sports.  Football and men’s basketball are the only two sports that all 14 fanbases take seriously.  Some love baseball.  Some love women’s basketball.  Some love cross-country ballroom dancing.  Whatever.  Two sports make money.  It’s those two sports that we cover here at MrSEC.com.  And for this exercise, those two sports are the only ones whose wins we tally.

2.  We look only at games played between January 1st, 2013 and December 31st, 2013.  So if your team played in a December bowl in 2012-13 it doesn’t count.  If your team played in a January 2013 bowl it does count.  If your favorite team played in a December bowl in the 2013-14 bowl season it counts.  If your favorite team played in a January bowl this year it doesn’t.  January 1st through December 31st of 2013 only.

3.  The same goes for basketball.  From the 2012-13 season we include only those 2013 wins over Division I opponents.  From the current 2013-14 season we count only those victories from November and December of last year, none from this year.

4.  Just as we count bowl games in football, NIT and NCAA Tournament victories count as well (though in 2013 the SEC didn’t have a whole heckuva lot of those for us to worry about).

Finally, this is not an attempt to say which program is best.  It’s simply a look at which fanbases got to experience the most (and least) wins in the major sports during the 2013 calendar year.  Some wins are obviously bigger than others, but we didn’t assign any values to victories.  It’s a simple study — Which school’s fans went to bed smiling most often?

And now… the SEC’s happiest fanbases in 2013:

School   2013 BB Wins (12-13 Season)   2013 FB Wins (12-13 & 13-14 Seasons)   2013 BB Wins (13-14 Season)   Total Wins
  Missouri   13   11   11   35
  Ole Miss   17   9   9   35
  Florida   20   4   10   34
  Alabama   16   12   4   32
  LSU   11   9   9   29
  Texas A&M   9   10   8   27
  Vanderbilt   11   8   7   26
  Georgia   10   9   6   25
  Kentucky   13   2   10   25
  Tennessee   12   5   8   25
  Arkansas   11   3   10   24
  Auburn   4   12   7   23
  Miss. State   6   7   9   22
  S. Carolina   5   11   6   22

Think Missouri is enjoying life in the SEC?  The Tigers won more football and men’s basketball games in 2013 than any other conference program.  They also managed to capture an SEC East crown and reach the NCAA Tournament in basketball.

And how about Ole Miss.  Hugh Freeze has been a surprise hit and Marshall Henderson has helped lift Andy Kennedy’s hoops program.  It wasn’t that long ago that Rebel fans were clamoring for firings all around.

Now, the title of happiest fanbase would have gone to Florida had the Gators not completely disintegrated in football last season.  Heck, a win over Georgia Southern would have pushed the reptiles into a first-place tie.  At least Billy Donovan has held up his end of the bargain.

A string of SEC West programs — Alabama, LSU and Texas A&M — all finished ahead of the next pack of East Division programs — Vanderbilt, Georgia, Kentucky and Tennessee.

And bringing up the rear were Arkansas (good in hoops, bad in football), Auburn (good on the gridiron, bad on the hardwood), Mississippi State (bad in hoops, average in football), and South Carolina (down in basketball, up again in football).

So congrats to the Tiger and Rebel fans out there whose teams won more football and men’s basketball games in 2013 than the SEC’s other 12 programs.  Not bad for one program that many fans said didn’t belong in the Southeastern Conference and another that had a splintered fanbase just a few short months ago.  Kudos.

My only problem with this article is that fans generally don't see football and basketball equally. Most of the conference looks at football as at least twice as valuable as basketball.

If you apply some sort of formula wherein you weight the rankings using the football program revenue vs the basketball program revenue for each school, that might give a more accurate picture of fan base happiness. Or maybe if you had some conversion factor from the national average revenue for these sports. Because you know Kentucky cares more about basketball than football, but the revenue for football may still be larger. But you get the idea.

Personally, I'd expect a different ranking based on this. with South Carolina fans much higher on the list, Florida fans significantly more disgruntled and Auburn fans in the top 3 regardless of their basketball program. Tennessee would be bottom 4 because of their football program and lack of NCAA basketball tourney appearance.

love your site...but disagree about the rankings... 100% positive that Mississppi State fans are a hell of alot happier with their athletic program than a host of other SEC schools....4 straight bowls, beating Ole Miss four out five years,  yes our basketball team is not that strong but at least competitive this year ....And most important, our baseball team (which does make money and carries probably as much weight as basketball in our happiness scale was in the finals of the World Series......I think that would put us far above Tenn , Ark, Fla, Geo, Ole Miss (which we beat in basketball just last week) and probaly many others that have struggled in one or both areas.....using your formula I see your math ... just know alot of us fans use a more realistic approach to gage sucess.....Ask all the big money boosters at most of the other SEC schools and see how happy they are with where their athletic program is....

A suggestion ....why not list bowls, championships ...both division and overall, post-season appearances, winning % for the last 20 years in football, basketball and baseball and see how the chips fall....bet there would be some surprising numbers for some big names in the SEC

add to that tournament championships.....hope to see that ....
