The first year of the new Big 12/SEC Challenge came and went with little fanfare. Perhaps because the SEC just can’t hold up its end of the bargain on the hardwood these day. Perhaps because the games were so spread out so as not to draw much attention. Or perhaps because it’s a basketball series played between two football conferences.
Next season, the challenge between all 10 Big 12 teams and 10 of the SEC’s 14 teams is on the calendar for the weekend of December 4th through the 6th. If you see the problem there you’re already ahead of the folks who locked in the challenge in the first place. Yep, that’s conference championship game weekend on the gridiron.
As Jon Solomon of The Birmingham News reports today, the SEC and Big 12 are considering moving the dates for the challenge away from a weekend when the media will be focused on football, not basketball. Wise move.
Could the series be moved into January or February when conference play is underway? Apparently everything is on the table. That’s also good thing. If you want to have a showcase basketball challenge it’s needs to actually be — ya know — showcased.
Expect ESPN — along with the SEC and Big 12 — to have a hand in the selection of the new dates.
