SEC Stats: The League’s Defenses Much Worse Than Last Year

mrsec stat analysis newChalk it up to veteran quarterbacks (though some so-so quarterbacks have put up big numbers, too).  Blame it on youthful defenses (though some experienced defenses have been lit up, too).  Point the finger at statistics skewed by hurry-up offenses running more plays (though we’re about to debunk that one).

Whatever the reason, SEC defenses are simply not as strong in 2013 as they were in 2012.  Nowhere close, in fact.

At this juncture of the season, only two SEC programs — Auburn and Missouri — boast better yards-allowed-per-play numbers than they did last season.  Two.  The other 12 teams?  Worse.

Below is quick glance at the amount of yardage given up per play by each SEC school against BCS opposition.  The yard-per-play thing takes the number of plays being run out of the equation.  Have a look for yourself:

  School   2013 Yds/All/Play   2012 Yds All/Play   Change
  Florida   4.77   4.33   0.44 worse
  Alabama   4.99   4.38   0.61 worse
  Missouri   5.31   5.78   0.47 better
  S. Carolina   5.47   4.63   0.84 worse
  LSU   5.66   4.64   1.02 worse
  Ole Miss   5.87   5.79   0.08 worse
  Georgia   5.88   5.27   0.61 worse
  Auburn   6.11   6.48   0.37 better
  Vanderbilt   6.19   5.00   1.19 worse
  Miss. State   6.22   5.67   0.55 worse
  Arkansas   6.41   6.18   0.23 worse
  Texas A&M   6.42   5.45   0.97 worse
  Tennessee   6.70   6.49   0.21 worse
  Kentucky   6.97   6.01   0.96 worse

Does this decline in SEC defensive play show that no-huddle attacks are finally taking a toll on the nation’s toughest league?  There certainly are more teams running up-tempo attacks inside the league and perhaps defenses are a) wearing down and b) failing to line up properly as a result.

Or, could it be that this is just a one-year blip brought on by all of the issues mentioned above — good QBs, young defenders, fast-paced attacks, etc?

Only time will tell and that means waiting ’til 2014 to know for sure.  With regards to this seasons, there’s no debate about it.  SEC defenses just aren’t as fearsome as they were a season ago.

More and more of the elite athletes who choose football are being used on the offensive side across the sport. This has made its way into the SEC. Do you place your studs at wide receiver or defensive back, running back or linebacker, offensive line or defensive line? More often than in the past, the answer is the offensive position. You can argue whether it is the right decision or not, but the trend is obvious.

The other big picture impact is how the game is administered. We have chosen to goose up scoring by allowing more holding by the offense and less by the defense. We've reduced the fear of the big (often dirty) hit.  And, due to so much 7 on 7 at the high school level, we see kids going to college who are more comfortable and effective in a passing offense than a running one.

IMHO, it has a lot to do with so much NFL draft talent leaving the SEC early, especially on the defensive side of the ball.... at some point there just isn't enough/the same level of new talent coming in to match the talent that has been lost... I think the league is kind of in a "reloading" period right now.

Even though Missouri hasn't faced the same level of offense that they did last year... I am impressed that our defense actually seems better at this point.  I really thought losing Sheldon Richardson was going to cause us to take a big step back.

I think the targeting rule is having an impact as well.  It's not only giving teams more first downs via penalty, and taking out a good defender when it's called.  It's also changing the way DBs (safeties in particular) and LBs are hitting receivers across the middle of the field.  Those hits use to go a long way towards keeping Os in check.
