Ole Miss’ Freeze Says No-Huddle Is “A Great Equalizer”

gfx - they said itOle Miss head coach Hugh Freeze has his second team of Rebels nationally ranked and standing at 3-0 overall.  They’ve won their conference opener at Vanderbilt and last week blasted Texas in Austin.

Ole Miss currently ranks fourth in the SEC in total offense (490 yards per game) and second in the league in terms of seconds-per-offensive-snap.  Freeze believes his hurry-up offense is a big reason for the Rebels’ offensive totals and their victories to date:

“I think more people are seeing that can be advantageous to you.  You’re getting more plays, which results in more first downs, which results in more yards and more touchdowns… The offensive world has changed.  Somebody told me yesterday on my radio show I think we’re averaging right at 500 yards a game and I think we’re 30th in the nation.  Five, six year ago, you’re go to be in the top five with that…

I do believe firmly that if you have the best offensive line in the country and the best backs and the best defense, I don’t know that this is the best answer for you.  But if you don’t feel like you’re in a place where you’re always going to have that, I do think it’s a great equalizer… I think it makes it harder to prepare for us, because you really have to carry a smaller (defensive) package, I think.”

For those who like fast-break style “basketball on grass,” the future looks bright.  With more teams going up-tempo scoring will likely continue to go up.  Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing for the SEC — a league that’s succeeded nationally by playing superior defense — remains an awfully big question.

Love it when sports writers refer to it as “basketball on grass” its called crossing the endzone. There is no right or wrong way to do it.

Like everything else in life, adapt or become dinos. Or, even better, figure out the next wave and be ahead of the game making others adapt to you. Hurry-up offenses is lik elowering the pitching mound in baseball years ago.

Ultimately the hurry up requires more depth and less specialty. You can't keep your studs on the field series after series and you can't substitute by down and distance as well. Which teams can have strong, two-deep depth charts and can recruit athletes best? It' is the Alabamas, the LSUs, the Georgias, and the Floridas of the world. They need to recruit a somewhat different kind of player, one more oriented toward endurance and somewhat less towards quick motor. Worry less about the first 40 time and more about 10 - 40 times in a row with 15 second breaks in between. When that happens, the no-huddle will look less inviting to the historical have-not teams and they'll have to come up with some new innovation as their great equalizer.

Love it when a fan takes offense to something that's not the least bit offensive or derogatory.  Basketball scores are higher than football scores.  As football scores rise, the natural hyperbolic description of that transformation is "basketball on grass."

Who said there is a right way or a wrong way?
