Bret Bielema announced yesterday that receiver D’Arthur Cowan will be out six to eight weeks after undergoing surgery on his left foot. According to the Hogs’ coach:
“He was really having a great fall camp. It was in pre-practice. He’s a punt return guy. He just kind of caught it, took a couple of steps and heard a crack in his foot. They put a screw in it and he should be back in hopefully a six to eight week window.”
The Razorback receiving corps is growing thin. And fast.
Demetrius Wilson is out for the season after suffering an ACL tear last week. Mekale McKay was recently given the OK to transfer to Cincinnati. Now minus Cowan, Arkansas is down to six scholarship receivers. Two of the six are freshmen and another — Keon Hatcher — is currently hampered by a hamstring injury.
Making matters worse, tight end Austin Tate will be out four to six weeks after having shoulder surgery.
Add it all up and it’s not the way one would want to break in a first-time starting quarterback like Brandon Allen.
